NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Receiving a complaint about bed bugs in Davidson County has become a daily occurrence at the Metro Public Health Department. Larry Cole is the Director of Pest Services for the department and told News 2 the number of complaints of bedbugs continues to increase.

Bed bugs are small insects that are primarily active at night and come out to feed on blood.

According to Cole, bed bugs are on the rise everywhere, not just in Nashville.

“This is all over,” he told News 2.  “They are having these problems in every city.”

If you receive a bite during the night, Cole recommends contacting a professional exterminator to check out your home.

“These insects are hard to get rid of and one time spraying is not going to do it,” he added.  “There are some procedures that you are going to have to do.  you might have to get rid of some furniture.”

Cole also recommends taking precautions against bed bugs while traveling.

“We always like for you to pull the cover back and look at the mattress,” he advised.  “If you see brown spots in there, or if something happens to bite you at night, then you should suspect that it is bed bugs.”

Bed bugs hide in crevices and can survive with eating for up to 18 months.

Davidson County residents can contact Metro health officials if they suspect bed bugs are present and the department will send an inspector to take a look.
