Federal agents have interviewed Mets shortstop Jose Reyes about his association with a Canadian doctor who is under investigation for drug violations, including conspiring to smuggle human growth hormone into the United States from Canada, a source close to the investigation told the Daily News Saturday night.

After Dr. Tony Galea’s December arrest following a September border stop near Buffalo of his assistant in which syringes, vials and various drugs were seized from a vehicle she was driving, Reyes said that he had used Galea’s controversial “blood-spinning” treatment to help recover from a torn right hamstring tendon. Reyes is one of several elite athletes, including Tiger Woods, who received treatment from Galea, who faces charges in Canada of conspiring to smuggle HGH and the drug Actovegin into the U.S., conspiracy to smuggle prohibited goods into Canada, unlawfully selling Actovegin and smuggling goods into Canada in violation of the Customs Act.

Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said the team is aware of the situation.

Sports Illustrated posted a story Saturday night on its Web site saying that federal law enforcement officials have alerted a number of athletes that they could expect grand jury subpoenas in the case against Galea. His client list includes Woods, Reyes, former Met Carlos Delgado, Olympic swimmer Dara Torres and Broncos quarterback Chris Simms among others.

SI.com cited three sources familiar with the investigation in its report. The magazine’s Web site also reported that investigators had been in touch with several NFL players.

Reyes is believed to have told investigators that he used only the blood-spinning or platelet-rich therapy treatment, which Galea pioneered and which he says speeds recovery from injury, and does not expect to have any further involvement with the feds as the case proceeds.

In a December interview on WFAN, Reyes denied receiving HGH or other drugs from Galea, whom he visited in the doctor’s Toronto offices.

“No, no, no, nothing like that,” Reyes said. “He treat me. I went there. he just did like, PRP treatment for me. It was my own blood.”

“A lot of people talked about (Galea),” Reyes said. “I wanted to come back so bad to the field to play, so I say, ‘Why not? Let’s try this guy and see if he can fix me.’ “

Reyes said the treatment failed to help him recover.

Galea has adamantly denied providing HGH to the athletes he treats, including Woods.

The embattled golfer went out of his way in his first public appearance since the Nov. 27 car accident that turned his life upside down to deny that he ever used performance-enhancing drugs.
