FERNDALE – Blue lights and banners strung across Ferndale, along with billboards and electronic signs on Woodward and I-75, signify the ninth annual Ferndale Blues Festival.
The music festival is held to raise money for two local charities, the Ferndale Youth Assistance and Michigan AIDS Coalition. with at least 66 concerts featuring mostly local bands and events in 23 venues, the event takes place from Friday, Jan. 29 to Saturday, Feb. 6. Most of the concerts are free with no cover charge.
Volunteers help raise money through collecting donations at concert doors and by passing the blind blue piggy banks, the icons of the festival. More than 75 of the piggy banks are in stores, shops and restaurants throughout Ferndale.
Blue paper-mache piggy banks are also out in the community, made by students with autism at Cooley High School in Detroit.
